STEPS TO GETTING STARTED

 

STEP 1:
Determine which program is for you: 
Entry-Level Merchant Mariner, Recreational Marlinspike, or USCG Able Bodied Seaman Certificate Course by viewing open courses below, and reading each open program's requirements.
 
STEP 2:
If you have additional questions after reviewing the application requirements, introduce yourself through our CONTACT US page and we will get back to you.
 
STEP 3:
If you are ready to join an upcoming class, sign up and pay for your course on the REGISTER page. If you are seeking Financial Aid, check to make sure you satisfy the eligibility requirements for your program of interest, follow the application links and submit to hello@theseafarercollective.org.
 
STEP 4:
Wait for a response from the Seafarer Collective team regarding your application. Once processed, we will reach out to discuss your application's standing and set up a potential interview. 
 
STEP 5:
If accepted, begin your self-paced online course, and prepare to either board a training vessel for your Volunteer Crew Phase or attend your in-person AB exam.

The Entry-Level Merchant Mariner Course. 
Note: This course requires 8 weeks of self-paced online curriculum and an onboard Volunteer Crew Phase.

Online AB Certificate Course

Note: This course requires 4 weeks of self-paced online curriculum and an in-person exam. Sea Time Requirements Apply
 

Recreational Marlinspike Course

Note: This course requires 1 week of self-paced online curriculum, and includes the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport onboard Volunteer Crew Opportunity - Two Weeks Before the Mast. To enroll, contact GHHS for more information HERE

WHAT ARE THE BASICS?

ENTRY LEVEL MERCHANT MARINER

  1. 18 + years old

  2. Have a doctor's approval to participate and can pass a drug test

  3. Have no criminal history that is a safety concern

  4. Access to a computer

ONLINE AB CERTIFICATE

  1. All Entry-Level Mariner Requirements 

  2. Documented Required Sea Time

Introductory Rate of 

$1,150 for ONLINE ONLY

 

ONLINE AB CERTIFICATE

$650

RECREATIONAL MARLINSPIKE

$799

Each course comes with unique self-paced online curriculum, varying onboard crewing opportunities,

USCG endorsement support. 

WHO CAN APPLY?

 

 

T The Seafarer Collective was built to act as a springboard for people with barriers to entering the maritime industry.

 

We encourage all interested candidates to apply and have Financial Aid 

available to eligable applicants

 for our Entry-Level Merchant Mariner Program. 

 

If you do not meet the the Financial Aid need criteria, your application will still be considered for

a later course. 

CAN I GET FINANCIAL AID?

 

Payment installments and financial aid are available to eligible candidates. To be eligible for an Entry-Level Merchant Mariner Program scholarship, your 2018 income must be less than twice the federal poverty level(e.g. $24,280 for a single person)

We do not currently offer Financial Aid for our Recreational Marlinspike Course or Online AB Certificate. Crew Development Grants may be used for our Online AB Certificate if awarded.
